Community Question: Pricing Concerns & Avoiding the “Hook and Screw” Approach

We’ve started this forum to build a stronger home inspection community and make sure your questions, ideas, and feedback are seen and answered in one place. Some great points come in via email, and I’ll also be posting them here (with identifying details removed) so we can all benefit from the discussion.

Here’s one we recently received:

“Another important consideration to me is avoiding the common hook and screw approach to pricing. One thing that might help is some kind of commitment to cap annual price increases. What I commonly see is apps that are sold at a low attractive price then “upgraded” with a bunch of features that I have no interest in or need for, which then serve as the excuse for a substantial price increase.”

This is a really important concern we hear from inspectors. Many software companies push out features that add complexity and bloat — things most inspectors don’t want — and then use those as justification for hiking up subscription prices.

At SwiftReporter, our focus is deliberately narrow: fast, affordable, no-fluff report writing. By not adding billing, scheduling, or other extras, we keep the product simple and costs locked at the lowest in the industry. The goal is to give you confidence that what you sign up for today will remain sustainable long-term.

We’d love to hear your thoughts — how important is price stability to you when choosing software? And have you been caught in this “hook and screw” trap before with other tools?
